Their grounded, rhythmic and at ease character as well as freedom and naturalness of movement strongly represent this heritage. And furthermore, the cultural melting pot of late 1920’s New York brought together musicians and composers from Harlem, Cuba and Puerto Rico, all influencing each other, offering and creating a rich landscape of dance music, including Swing. In the 1930s to 50s, New York's many ballrooms like the Savoy were cooking with various styles of music and dance, and old timers claim that “everybody danced everything”. So it is no surprise that HERRÄNG DANCE CAMP added Cuban Dances to their program. All Lindy Hop lovers are hence cordially invited to gain a deeper idea of Swing by diving into Cuban dance culture for at least a day. Especially its quality of movement is a distinct part of Authentic Jazz and the Lindy Hop. Our workshop teacher Lisandra Cervantes has over 20 years of experience in teaching Cuban dances to offer to further your dancing. And her so very beautiful and knowledgeable way of moving her body is a treasure in itself. A sure prognosis: Her ease and calm will rub off on you already by watching her move. In the evening we will celebrate the conjunction of Swing and Cuban culture with a dance feast at NOU, where quite a few meetings of different dance forms have already joyously happened with UPTOWN LODOWN. Join in! A B O U T L I S A N D R A C E R V A N T E S Cuba-born and raised Lisandra Cervantes finished her studies of various Cuban dances after 6 years at the University of Arts in Havana and has been teaching ever since. She has plenty of experience in conveying her culture and expertise to dance students from different kinds of culture and background. Living in Berlin for several years, she certainly knows her way around all peculiarities of movement. Watch her dance! ➢➣➢ A B O U T C U B A N R U M B A The Cuban Rumba is a term comprising a vast variety of Cuban dance forms which are known since the 18th century and whoms origin is distinctly African – hence it is called Afro-Cuban Rumba as well. It was created by African ethnicity; slaves who were brought from Africa, and their descendants. During its progression, Spanish influences were also included. Find further info and video recommendations by Lisandra! ➢➣➢ Rumba – as many vernacular dances – was transformed by european influence into a new and quite different dance, called Rhumba, with an added "h", meaning the ballroom version. This version won't be the topic of this workshop. |
