Um es mit Count Basie zu sagen: „If you play a tune and a person don’t tap their feet, don’t play the tune.“ – der Count wusste, wie man Tänzer beglückt. Count Basie sagt dazu: „It's the way you play that makes it. ... Play like you play. Play like you think, and then you got it, if you're going to get it. And whatever you get, that's you, so that's your story.“ Ersetze „play“ mit „dance“, und der Satz beschreibt sehr treffend, was Swingtanzen bedeutet. Let’s let go and "let dance"* together!
CANCELED, SORRY!
Let's LET DANCE* together A Workshop for Swing dancers Saturday, August 18 2018 6 to 8 pm // 2 hours for 15 €, reduced 12 € at Swingspiration Studio // Körtestr. 10, 10967 Berlin-Kreuzberg Register here ➢➣➢ Find this event on facebook: www.facebook.com/events/289029431833880 The head is nodding to the beat, the foot is tapping along – that right there is where Swing dancing begins. To say it with Count Basie: "If you play a tune and a person don’t tap their feet, don’t play the tune." – the Count knew how to make dancers happy. And that’s the wonderful thing about Swing music: It sets you in motion, it makes you move. And without any need for forcing or "organising" it – you can let the music do it for you. At parties, there’s often a lot of distraction: a crowded dance floor, new people to dance with, plenty of steps and figures. There’s so much going on that often enough you do enjoy the music – but how much of it do you really hear? How much do you pick up from it, how much is being ignored? And how much of what you feel are you actually showing? Sometimes you maybe do not yet dare to let go or well, "let dance"* a little bit more. Too shy to really welcome and cherish your own impulses. But those own impulses are exactly what’s most honest or sincere and therefore most precious in Swing. As Swing is Jazz, and Jazz is about individuality, about how you do it – that’s what makes Jazz Jazz. Count Basie put it like this: "It's the way you play that makes it. ... Play like you play. Play like you think, and then you got it, if you're going to get it. And whatever you get, that's you, so that's your story." Exchange "play" with "dance", and this sentence basiecally nails what Swing dancing is about. For this workshop we first will gather at the studio, just us, no distraction or „audience“. At the beginning we’ll listen to music, not moving all too much. No counting, no music theory either. Just listening, exchanging what we perceive, what accents stand out, what repetitions, how the beat makes you feel right now, where there’s maybe an urge coming up to shake your shoulders, or to stomp your feet, or to clap, or to just walk with the beat, or to stand still and wiggle a bit, or or or … and to eventually do just that, just what you feel. Leaving all expectations out of it for once. No plan, nothing forced. We just let dance. And then we go out Swing dancing together. :) Totally in the groove, with eager ears and free feet and all. Bring your friends, the bigger the group the better the exchange and the motivation, and the less the shyness, if there is. Let’s let go and "let dance"* together! Please contact me if you have any questions, or simply register here ➢➣➢ *“Let Dance“ is how the great Dawn Hampton used to put it when she talked about dancing Swing. She was such an inspiration to the nowadays Swing dance scene, and everyone who ever listened to her talks in Herräng, or saw her dance, was in awe of her and the spirit she was so generously spreading. Until the end she tirelessly and very outspokenly reminded the Swing scene that dancing means so much more than steps and figures. Here’s an excerpt from one of her talks – the first one and a half minutes say it all: |
